still on my honeymoon

I say I'm still on the honeymoon phase of my trip because I'm still in Chiang Mai (not Mae Sai), I'm not yet doing what I came here to do, and my Thai language immersion courses...well, they haven't really immersed me into much of anything other than a few handouts worth of expressions vocabulary words. They don't take too long to memorize and there are many more hours of the day to account for when that's all said and done. Having said that, I spent today visiting an elephant camp, riding one up and down some steep hills, visiting the mong tribal village way deep in the mountains, and steering a raft through a river. I spent the entirety of my day doing this with some Australians I met on the van. Oh, and by the way, to do all this and have a tour guide take you to all of these places from 8:30 AM- 5PM : $15. It's nothing short of absurd. I'll be in for a rude awakening in about a week.

Eli-funt?
You rode on a eli-funt?

Tell me - did you get your own? Were they smelly? And how uncomfortable was it?

didja smell the elephant, make a face, and then put perfume on it? only to be kicked off into a puddle, to the vast amusement of your hot archeologist companion and his asian sidekick?
... or did you just ride it around and stuff. not that that's not cool or anything... i guess.

hah, i thought it was more comfortable than horseback riding. And yes, since I was travelling stag I got my own elephant. And actually i didn't smell a damned thing until they made bowel movements. Elephants defecate and walk at the same time like horses, so it's not something you notice for longer than 8 seconds or so. My tour guide did look like kid from indiana jones though, coincidentally enough. When that was all finished we fed the elephants whole banana bunches from a high rock. They breath really heavily from their trunks and they'll even coil them around your limbs when they want something from you.
